So Far So Good – Local Advancers

Check out the video above for an inspiring and eye opening short feature on a young Winnipeg entrepreneur . Peter Takis may only be 16 years old but that didn’t stop him from launching a rapidly growing street wear brand from his bedroom in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

I have never met Peter personally, but I can’t help but be impressed by how mature, confident and poised he is about his business at such a young age.

Definitely going to have to make a trip to The Urban Bakery soon and pick up a Local Advancers shirt.

Pal Chawla: A True Role Model

Role Model: A person looked to by others as an example to be imitated.

You will never meet someone more deserving of being called a role model than Pal. After working together for the past decade, I now realize that the most important things he has ever taught me have nothing to do with badminton but rather something much more important and valuable. I hope to one day be half as dedicated, passionate, hard working and respected as Pal is.

Have an amazing retirement!

Definitely my new favorite picture of Winnipeg’s downtown (my previous favorite picture I actually ended up purchasing a print of). I can’t help but get an “eerie/hazy” type of feeling when I look at at.

As well, I am looking forward to starting work this summer at the building on the left…

Drinking And Driving: It Needs To Stop

Please watch the video above and think twice the next time you decide to drink and drive (Graphic Scenes).

Early Sunday morning (October 31st 2010) a Chevrolet Cavalier sped through a red light of an 80km/h intersection colliding directly with a Pontiac Sunfire. The seventeen year old driver of Cavalier was drunk. At the time of writing this post, two passengers of the Sunfire are dead and one has yet to be stabilized two days later.

While I was not personally acquainted with any of the involved parties, this is still a story that hits home pretty hard. All five passengers of the Sunfire were alumni of my high school and in their late teens. Having seen the wreck only fifteen minutes after the collision, the mental image of twisted metal, flashing lights and frantic screams serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with driving under the influence.

Groupon: One Great Deal Each Day (Now In Winnipeg)

Groupon is a service that utilizes collective buying in order to offer one, extremely good deal each day. These deals can include discounted gift certificates (ex: $50 for $25), products and services. The website’s popularity has exploded across the United States and Canada. Last Year Groupon posted profits of $350 Million and the service is now available in over 150 cities in over 17 countries (including the recent addition of Winnipeg).

While the benefits for customers are obvious (deeply discounted goods), Groupon has also been a hit among business owners. 97% of business owners who offer their products with Groupon say they would do it again. Groupon offers assurance (by not releasing a deal until a set amount of purchases have been made), great promotion (full time writers are on staff to write business profiles) and support for businesses that are looking for a creative form of promotion.

Great business model. Quality offerings. I’m a fan.
