Released only last week, I have been obsessed with this song (and eagerly awaited its release) since the first preview I heard a few months ago. The lyrics (sung by Chris James) tell the story of Ray Bradbury’s short story by the same name. I could see this track having success not only among electronic music circles but more mainstream audiences as well.

Newtons 3 Laws Of Motion

The velocity of a body remains constant unless the body is acted upon by an external force.

The acceleration a of a body is parallel and directly proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the mass.

The mutual forces of action and reaction between two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear.

The past 10 months or so of my life have been some best I have ever lived. I am more self aware and happy than I have ever been, am achieving my goals at a rate faster than I ever thought possible, am surrounded by some amazing people whom I admire/challenge me & best of all it shows no sign of slowing down with some of the most exciting things still to come. I have had some free time recently and have put some effort into reflecting on what has made this time in my life great.

Through my reflection, I was able to synthesize four main changes in my thought patterns. I couldn’t help but notice similarities to Newton’s Laws of Motion which I pasted above (Source).

1) Your acceleration is inversely proportional to your mass. Do not weigh yourself down with things in that hamper your goals or happiness (material objects, people, emotions etc.). It is difficult, but in order to achieve your full potential you need to be bold and cut out all anchors that restrict you.

2) Always have something “on the go” and stay in a forward motion. Whether it is academic, professional or personal you should always have something you are working towards or an end goal. Exciting opportunities attract and breed similar opportunities subsequent to their completion. Before you accept or reject an opportunity, think about spin-off benefits and what it may lead to down the road.

3) Work really hard and apply your full force to the RIGHT things. Remember that everyone (barring illness or incapacity) can give the same amount of force and what you have to offer is limited. The only difference between people who do remarkable things and those who are average is the allocation of their time and effort.

4) Every action you take has an opposite reaction (although unlike Newton says, it is not always equal). Something that provides you with small pleasure at the expense of somebody else experiencing a large amount of distress is not worth it to pursue. As well, be conscious of people and situations that do not share this mentality.

Over the past year or so, I have found myself consciously reading more content than I ever have in my life. For the most part, this reading has been done through the internet rather than traditional sources (books, novels, mainstream media). Using Google Reader (both on my computer and Android phone) I am able to have nearly 500 targeted news articles and blog posts delivered to me daily in one consolidated location. Often the problem isn’t finding something stimulating to read, but selecting which pieces to dedicate my attention. Below are three blogs that I have enjoyed following.

1) Scott H. Young

Scott is a fellow alumni of the Asper School of Business. Although I have never met or spoke with him personally (something I would love to do one day) I have developed a lot of respect for him after reading his work for the past 18 months or so. Scott’s primary writing focus is on accelerated learning techniques but I find his views on academia and having a balanced lifestyle to be just as interesting. Scott is currently embarked on “The MIT Challenge” in which he is halfway done completing MIT’s four year Computer Science program in 12 months using only online resources.

Link: http://www.scotthyoung.com/blog/

2) This Song Is Sick

I am often asked where I learn about and discover new music and I always answer “music blogs”. While I currently subscribe to almost two dozen music blogs spanning a variety of genre’s, my favorite at the moment is “This Song Is Sick”. Focusing on both Hip Hop and Electronic music, “This Song Is Sick” provides about a 50/50 balance between well established mainstream artists and independent/underground talent. Even better is that the vast majority of the music posted is available for free direct download right from the site.

Link: http://thissongissick.com/blog/

3) Study Hacks

Dr. Cal Newport founded Study Hacks while being a Computer Science PhD Candidate at MIT. Over the years, the blog has turned into a progressive exploration of highly successful people and what separates them from those who are simply average. Cal is staunchly opposed to common wisdom such as “follow your passion” and “be well rounded” while alternatively advocating “do something difficult and in demand” and “be very good at a few things and forget everything else” (NB: I am paraphrasing). All of Dr. Newport’s posts are well written, insightful and have sparked thought patterns and even changes in action within my own life.

“Everybody does it; it’s just that nobody talks about it.”

~Kathryn Merteuil (Cruel Intentions)

TyDi – The Camera Doesn’t Lie, But You Do (Original Mix)

Play Or Download (Right Click – “Save Link As”)

While listening to the above track by TyDi (one of my favorite new Trance producers) I was hypnotized by the sample quote that drops at 2:36. I found myself repeatedly looping the 5 second clip while thinking of all the possible interpretations. It seemed so open ended, sinister and enticing that I couldn’t help but investigate where the sample had been taken from. After some quick Googling, I discovered that the sample and quote was from the movie Cruel Intentions.

Cruel Intentions is a 1999 film adaptation of the classic French novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”. For those unfamiliar with the story, it is one of the purest examples of seduction, manipulation, revenge and betrayal. If you watch the movie with a critical mind and are able to push aside some of the teen drama clichés, you can gain insight to one of the darker and most interesting aspects of human nature.

An amazing video summary of the year that Google started putting together last year. To me the biggest story of the year is the collective protesting that we have seen take place around the world. Whether protesting for political reform (Egypt & Sudan) or equality (Occupy), it seems that citizens around the world feel more empowered than ever before. With the proliferation of information access through social media, this is not a trend I think will fade away anytime soon.

To only further solidify this ongoing trend, TIME Magazine named it’s coveted Person of the Year to simply be “The Protestor”.
